WEATHER SITUATION -21.08.2016

Moist Southwesterly winds originating and blowing from the Atlantic Ocean are established and have continued to move Northward within Niger and Chad republics; for today, they have maintained their position at Lat. 21.0oN in the Western sector and to Lat. 20.5oN in the Eastern sector, all outside the country. The South Atlantic anticyclone (also known as St. Helena high pressure cell) located in the Southern Hemisphere remained established and strengthened and  extends a ridge of high pressure into West Africa. Hence, more moisture influx into all parts of Nigeria, Niger and Chad republics are sustained.
 
The satellite imagery of today at 1500GMT shows convective cells developing in Borno/Adamawa states, in the Central states especially over Jos/Bauchi high grounds and in parts of Niger state; convective cells were also observed over Mambilla plateau down to areas in the Southeast and across the border into Cameroon republic and over parts of the Coastal states of the South-South.

Sunny, partly cloudy to cloudy conditions will affect most parts of the Northern states while thundery showers are expected to affect areas in the Northeast in the afternoon/evening. Cloudy conditions will prevail in the Central states with chances of afternoon showers while thunderstorms are expected to affect places especially the high ground areas during the evening/night period. The Southern parts will be mainly cloudy with rain showers likely to develop  in the afternoon; however, thunder with rains are expected to affect  parts of the  Southwest, Southeast and areas in the Coastal states during the afternoon/evening periods.
