L-R: Vice Chancellor, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU, Bauchi, Prof. Saminu Ibrahim Abdulrahman and the DG/CEO NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi after the signing of an MoU between NiMet and ATBU at NiMet Headquarters Abuja, recently.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi State, has become the second educational institution in Nigeria to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, for meteorological research, training and capacity building. This comes on the heels of the first MoU signed with the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, for laying solid foundation on robust weather/climate monitoring network in the country.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, which held at the NiMet headquarters in Abuja, the Director General/CEO NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi emphasized that the MoU is to promote research, capacity building and other activities that will enhance the delivery of products and services in the area of meteorology/climatology and/or climate change for national development.

Prof. Mashi who commended ATBU for being the second educational institution to sign the MoU out of the 34 institutions earmarked for the collaboration, disclosed that as a university, they are not just to award certificates but to embark on activities that would stimulate national development.

He therefore reasoned that if NiMet collaborates towards training and research in the university, it is invariably helping to advance similar mandate of promoting national development.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of ATBU, Prof. Saminu Ibrahim Abdulrahman reiterated that collaborations these days are inevitable because nobody has monopoly of every facet of knowledge and indeed research has shown that better results are achieved through partnership.

Prof. Abdulrahman explained that research, teaching and community service are the major functions of the university and noted that these present a common ground in the MoU. He therefore expressed optimism that both parties will utilize the opportunity to achieve success for the country and assured of ATBU’s commitment to the actualization of the objectives of the partnership.
