Dr. Mansir Aminu

Dr. Mansir Aminu holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Nigeria (2004). He obtained a Master’s Degree in Planning Information Technology (Urban Planning and Geographic Information System) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) (2007). In 2009, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Land Development Strategies from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) and in 2014, he bagged a PhD in Geoinformatics-Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Malaysia.

In 2007, he started his major working career at Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) where he participated in the computerisation of Cadastral and Land Registry of Abuja, which is one of the best spatial data infrastructure in the Country. In 2010, he moved to the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) where he served as the Head of Urban Space Applications Unit. While at NASRDA, Dr. Aminu has led and participated in many projects; some of which include: vulnerability assessment of critical infrastructure in Northeast Nigeria; flood susceptibility modeling of Federal Capital City, Abuja; development of Land Information System using pro-poor tools in Kuchiyako District, Kuje Area Council, Abuja; computerization of Cadastral and land registry of Lokoja, Kogi State; evaluation of the effect of insurgency on land use/ land cover variations; and mapping of Nigerian settlements at different scales to support other space applications. Also, he has served as NASRDA’s desk officer in the following projects/ organisation:

  • Georeferenced Infrastructure and Demographic Data for Development (GRID3)- a Bill and Melinda Gates funded Project
  • Integrated Deprived Areas Mapping System (IDEAMAPS)- also funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Telemedicine Project
  • Postcode Project- a Joint project with Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and National Population Commission (NPC).
  • UN-Habitat

Dr. Aminu was appointed as a visiting Senior Lecturer at Nasarawa State University and a part-time Senior Lecturer at Baze University, Abuja in 2016 and 2021, respectively. In 2006, he served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and a Graduate Assistant (GA) at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia in 2011. Furthermore, he was a member of International Conference on Civil, Offshore and Environmental Engineering (ICCOEE2014) Publication Sub-Committee which took place in June, 2014 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.      

Dr Aminu has also attended several short courses both at home and abroad some of which include: 

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar: TerraSAR-X Imagery (SARTrix) Analysis Course by Infoterra-Germany 
  • Introduction to Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS)- by Universiti Teknologi Petronas, (UTP) Malaysia
  • Short Course on Explanatory Data Analysis (EDA) by Civil Engineering Department Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Malaysia
  • Protection of Civilians Course by International Leadership and Peace Keeping Center, Jaji. Kaduna State, Nigeria

He has participated in several panel review meetings for Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Environment in different parts of Nigeria. In addition, Dr Aminu represented Nigeria at the Group on Earth Observation’s (GEO), 61st Executive Committee Meetings which took place in Geneva, Switzerland in July 2023.  He has several publications in reputable international journals and conferences including a book published in Germany. 

He also serves as a reviewer for Springer and Elsevier Journals. Some of his memberships include:

  • Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON)
  • Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP)

Dr Aminu is the Director, Engineering and Technical Services. He is an avid traveller and has visited several countries. He is happily married with Children.
