Professor Mansur Bako Matazu

Professor Mansur Bako Matazu was born on 8th January 1974 at Matazu, the Headquarters Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. He had his elementary education at Aliyu Primary School, Katsina (1980-1986) and proceeded to the prestigious Barewa College, Zaria, Kaduna State for his secondary education, from 1987 – 1993. From 1994 – 1999, he was at Bayero University, Kano, Kano State where he studied for, and obtained B.Sc. Geography. Prof. Matazu went to the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State from 2001 – 2003, for MTech degree in Meteorology, which he obtained with Distinction. He then returned to the Federal University of Technology, Minna in 2007 for a PhD in Geography with specialization in Applied Meteorology, which he bagged in 2012. He also holds a PGD in Urban Management Tools for Climate Change from Erasmus University, Netherlands (2012).

Prof. Matazu lectured at the Federal University of Technology, Minna from 2005 – 2014 where he rose from the position of Lecturer II to Senior Lecturer. Towards the end of 2014, he moved to the then recently established Federal University, Dustin-Ma, Katsina State where he remained until he became a full Professor in October 2019. Prof. Matazu has supervised over 60 undergraduates and many postgraduate dissertations and theses.

Prof. Matazu joined the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in 2016 as Assistant General Manager, Research and Training and rose to the position of General Manager. In 2017, he was appointed as Technical Assistant to the then DG/CEO, a position he held till March 2021. Following the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari’s reorganisation of the Aviation Sector, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu was appointed the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). His appointment was in line with the implementation of his administration’s Aviation Development Roadmap.

In April 2021, Prof. Matazu was designated the Permanent Representative of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). 

In June 2021, he was elected the Chairperson, Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD). Prof Matazu is the first Nigerian to be elected to this position in the 53 years history of the Centre.

Prof. Matazu is member of the Nigerian Environmental Society, African Forestry Forum, Nigerian Meteorological Society, the Climate Change Network, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Nigeria (REEN), among many other organisations. He has published books, chapters and journals both locally and internationally. He is a happily married family man.
