NiMet and World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Organise Capacity Building Workshop

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) organised a five (5) day Capacity Building Workshop on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and its application in climate services. The workshop is holding at NiMet Conference Hall between the 14th to 18th of August 2023. It is themed ‘Advancing the use of Numerical Weather Prediction in Operational Forecasting in Nigeria and it is aimed at providing participants with essential tools and knowledge in the field of NWP.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the DG/CEO, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu expressed enthusiasm and described the workshop as a unique opportunity which sees WMO and NiMet collaborating to enhance the technical skill of the staff of the Agency. He further stated that this underscores the pivotal role that NiMet plays in the support of sustainable development of the nation’s socio-economic sectors and our diverse role in the provision of forecasts to various stakeholders some of which include the general public, government support services, policymakers etc
Professor Matazu also added that the Agency’s service extends beyond Nigeria and we provide daily weather forecasts to some West African countries such as Sierra Leone, Liberia, Niger and Gambia and render meteorological services to other African Countries. He stressed that NiMet’s staff generates these services, hence making it essential that we strengthen staff productivity and service delivery by engaging in various capacity-building workshops like this.
He applauded the WMO for this significant initiative and urged the participants to seize the opportunity to elevate their proficiency in NWP which will lead to the development of innovative meteorological products and services.
Speaking in response and on behalf of the WMO (Education and Training Department), Mr Kyung Jeen Park, a seconded expert from the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) commended NiMet for its accuracy in its forecasting and highlighted the importance of this workshop as a means of shedding light on novel meteorological products and services that can be generated using NWP, its interpretation and usage.
This collaboration is a testament to the synergy between WMO and NiMet and their commitment to the advancement of meteorological capabilities and ensuring the provision of accurate and valuable weather information.
