NiMet DG re-elected to WMO Executive Council

The Director General/CEO, Nigeria Meteorological Agency, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu has been re-elected as a member of the World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) Executive Council. He was re-elected at the 19th Session of the WMO Congress which was held in Geneva, Switzerland from the 22nd to the 2nd of June 2023. The World Meteorological Congress is the highest decision-making body of WMO, comprising 193 Member States and Territories referred to as Members. His election is to run for four years.

Professor Matazu who is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, has been a member of the Executive Council since his assumption of office. He was recognised for his dedication and commitment to the advancement of the science of Meteorology and to humanity. For his efforts, he was unanimously elected to represent the WMO’s Regional Association I (Africa) alongside Kenya, Cameroon, Eswatini, South Africa, Egypt, and Burkina Faso.

Also, at this year’s WMO Congress, History was made by the Election of the First Woman Secretary General of WMO, Professor Celeste Saulo, Director, Servicio Meteologicio Nacional- Argentina.  Her Tenure starts from the 1st January 2024.
