The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) under the dynamic leadership of Professor Mansur Bako Matazu has been ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 29990: 2010 recertified. This is coming on the heels of a detailed and rigorous quality management audit. Our ISO 9001: 2015 recertification is for the provision of Aerometeorological Services while the ISO 29990: 2010 is for Capacity Building at our Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Lagos and Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology (MBMIST) Katsina respectively
Professor Matazu explained that NiMet took the challenge as far back as 2013 and has been consistent in maintaining the 3-year certification and just got ISO 9001:2015 recertificated in the provision of aeronautical meteorological at the six (6) major international airports in the country. We are currently working hard to extend it to Ten (10) more airports across the country.
Speaking further he stated that we also acquired recertification in ISO 29990:2010 for capacity building. It will be recalled that NiMet runs two (2) training institutes like polytechnics, one in RTC which is World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) accredited and the Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology (MBMIST) which was also recently accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) as a training centre that offers diploma courses in Meteorology, Applied Meteorology and Climate Change.
NiMet is the first met service on the African continent to have acquired this certification. Presently the Agency is serving as an auditor for some African countries like Malawi, and Gambia. It is of note that NiMet has also been approached by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to assist and guide them to acquire this certification.
According to Prof. Matazu, the implication of this recertification is that NiMet service delivery is at par with International Standards and gives a guarantee of the precision and efficiency of NiMet’s products and services.
