NiMet to Provide Weather Service for New Bayelsa Airport

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has signed an agreement with the Bayelsa State Government to provide Aeronautical meteorological services for the operation of the new Bayelsa airport.
At the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding, the Director-General/CEO, NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, who described the airport project as timely and commendable, added that as one of the leading oil producing states upon which Nigeria depends on, it is expected that the state would wish to construct its own airport in order to enhance commercial activities in the state.
Professor Mashi further noted that, despite being mandated by the Nigerian law to provide meteorological services to all sectors of the economy, aviation inclusive, NiMet possesses the requisite expertise and international certification to provide the needed service as required by the government of Bayelsa for the effective operation of the airport.
Speaking at the event, the Special Assistant to the Bayelsa State Government on Aviation Matters, Captain Henry Ungbuku, said that the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, places a high premium on due process, as such, he wishes to get every modality right, abinitio, before the official kick-off of the airport.
Capt. Ungbuku also stressed that, the Bayelsa airport is a state-of-the art edifice, built with a category II instrument approach system. This airport approach is centered on safety, and NiMet is one of the hallmarks when it comes to aviation safety in Nigeria, and the world.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Bayelsa State Government clearly spell out the obligations and responsibilities of each party in order to maintain mutually beneficial corporate relationship.
