DG/CEO NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi addressing Stakeholders at the just concluded Stakeholders meeting, held recently in Abuja
Stakeholders from different sectors of the Nigerian economy have applauded the consistency and accuracy of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s Seasonal Rainfall Prediction, SRP.
The 2019 pre-SRP stakeholder forum was held to discuss the implications of the 2019 SRP document to stakeholders from different sectors of the Nigerian economy.
The stakeholder forum was made up of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA; International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD; Centre for Disease Control; Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and others. They all had kind words and praise for the Agency in the accuracy of the 2018 SRP.
The IFAD, for instance, lauded the fact that NiMet’s 2018 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction was disseminated and downscaled to the 7 climate change vulnerable Northern states of Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Zamfara, Yobe and Borno and the result of this was the effective management of communicable diseases that usually plague the region.
The Director-General/CEO NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, who was visibly elated with the encomiums showered on the Agency and its services to Nigerians, revealed that the 2019 SRP will include new features such as malaria and meningitis forecasts. This is because of the outbreak of these diseases in some parts of the country this year. The 2019 SRP will also be downscaled to the 774 Local Government Areas in the country for effective grassroots service delivery.
Besides the above innovations to the 2019 SRP, Professor Mashi also added that, NiMet will, for the first time in its history present the SRP earlier than usual to ensure that Nigerians get the weather information in good time to enable them plan for the year.
The 2019 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction will enhance the implementation of the Agricultural promotion policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which has led to increased financial rewards to farmers across the country.
