WMO DIRECTOR COMMENDS NiMet

The World Meteorological Organization, WMO, Director, Regional Office for Africa, Dr. Amos Makarau has commended the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) effort in advancing meteorological services in Africa.
Dr. Makarau made this commendation during a courtesy visit to NiMet headquarters in Abuja.
The WMO Director disclosed that his organization is aware that NiMet is assisting other countries in the African region and giving value, which he described as rare in other regions. He posited that meteorological services in the region need to be more visible than it is at present and observed that African countries are in various stages of development, some are extremely in need of assistance while others are better off.
“NiMet is one of those National Meteorological and Hydrological Services that is very advanced in terms of resources, training, capacity and technical assistance”, he said.
Speaking further, Dr. Makarau revealed that his mission to NiMet is not only to assess the agency and its activities in Africa region, but also to find out how best NiMet will continue to play its part.
“My role is to say thank you very much for what you have done and possibly see how best we can continue to work together to assist other least developed countries who are in a more serious state than ours”, he concluded.
In his response, the Director-General/CEO NiMet, Prof. Sani Abubakar Mashi expressed appreciation to the regional office which is saddled with the responsibility of interfacing with NiMet on all matters of meteorology, climatology and hydrology.
He disclosed that the Federal Government has been committed to assisting the Regional Office since it was established in Nigeria in 1996, noting that the formal signing of the Host Country Agreement, (HCA) was executed in July 2018 by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, facilitated by the Minister for State, Aviation and duly ratified by the Secretary General of WMO during his maiden visit to Nigeria in September 2018.
Prof. Sani further updated Dr. Makarau on the effort NiMet has been making in terms of assisting countries in Africa and appealed for further support from WMO.
“We are very active in collaboration and partnership both nationally and internationally, so that is why we consider our relationship with the Regional Office for Africa as a very important one and we appeal that you do your maximum best to continue to support us”, he said.
Dr. Makarau who assumed office as the WMO Regional Director for Africa a month ago, was accompanied on the visit by Mr. Benard Gomez, the WMO Representative for North, Central and West African region. He expressed delight at the achievement of NiMet and assured that WMO will continue to support NiMet’s laudable efforts.
