World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) congratulates NiMet

Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) under the leadership of Professor Mansur Bako Matazu achieved double milestones. The Agency was recently congratulated by the World Metrological Organisation (WMO) for increasing its network of stations visibility from 0 to 28 stations on the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON) in the shortest possible time.
This feat surpassed WMO’s Target of 22 GBON Stations. This commendation was contained in an email from the Secretary General of WMO, Professor Peterri Taalas. He further encouraged NiMet to continue the outstanding work.
Also at the recently concluded 19th World Meteorological Organisation Congress held in Geneva Switzerland from the 22nd of May to the 2nd of June 2023, it recognised 86 Centennial Meteorological, 22 Centennial Hydrological and 10 Centennial Marine Observing Stations, worldwide. NiMet was awarded for two of its stations namely Benin and Enugu respectively. These certifications are for long term observation for more than 100 years. This increased NiMet’s total Centennial Stations to Seven (7). The following five (5) stations namely Calabar, Lagos Roof, Minna, Sokoto and Yola had earlier been designated as Centennial Stations in 2020.
