The Director General / Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike says that the integration of tourism with transportation is essential for fostering sustainable economic development.
Professor Anosike was speaking at the just concluded 7th edition of the National Tourism and Transportation Summit and Expo which took place between the 3rd and 4th of December 2024 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Professor Charles Anosike who was represented by the General Manager (Commercial) at NiMet, Mr Abdullatif Yusuf, disclosed that Tourism and Transportation are vital sectors that significantly contribute to the socio-economic development of the nation. He stressed that the seamless integration of tourism with transportation is essential for fostering sustainable economic development.
Professor Anosike further explained that NiMet’s commitment to providing accurate and timely weather information, which is the foundation for various sectors underscores the significant role weather and climate play in shaping travel experiences and transportation logistics. "As we discuss innovative solutions, policies, and strategies that will enhance the tourism experience in Nigeria, it is important to understand the significant role that weather and climate play in shaping travel experiences and transportation logistics. At NiMet, our commitment to providing accurate and timely weather information is a foundation for various sectors, including tourism and transportation. We are mindful that understanding the weather patterns can empower stakeholders to make informed decisions, ensuring that tourism thrives even in the face of climate variability", he explained.
Professor Anosike encouraged the participants to explore ways they can use meteorological data to improve transportation systems, enhance safety measures, and promote sustainable tourism practices. He noted that by working together, stakeholders can create a more climate-resilient and welcoming environment for domestic and international travelers and urged stakeholders to seize the opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and share knowledge that will elevate the country's tourism and transportation sectors to new heights and build a strong tourism infrastructure that can adapt to the changing climate and improve the visitor experience.
Hajiya Maimuna Bornov, Assistant General Manager (Climate Services) at NiMet participated in the technical session and shared insights in her paper titled; "Impact of Climate Change/Weather Forecasting on Tourism in the Sectoral Planning of Nigeria".
