Sustainable Development Goals

NiMet plays a critical role in its aim to realize the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals

This agenda provides a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. NiMet contributes to the SDGs through activities at the national and international levels. We intend to leverage our partnerships with relevant stakeholders, and communities, both locally and internationally. Please see below

Goal 1: No Poverty

Goal 2: Zero hunger

Goal 3: Good health and well-being

Goal 5: Gender Equality

Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation

Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy

Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities

Goal 13: Climate action

Goal 14: Life below water

Goal 15: Life on land

Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 1: No poverty
End poverty in all its forms everywhere

While not always recognized as poverty-reduction measures, accurate and timely weather forecast, seasonal climate prediction, and their advisories provide decision-makers with many essential, and often measurable, socioeconomic benefits.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 2: Zero hunger
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

The activities of Farmers, herders, and fishers are weather and climate-dependent. Through NiMet's support and collaborations, we can produce tailor-made information that helps improve food security. Our roving workshop for downscaling the Seasonal Climate Prediction assists farmers in practicing climate-smart agriculture to improve and increase their yield.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 3: Good health and well-being
Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Climatic conditions affect the outbreak and transmission of some diseases. Malaria, cerebrospinal meningitis, and heat stress are common health challenges. NiMet's meningitis and malaria prediction; heat stress and cholera warnings are delivered timely to the public, health organizations and emergency managers to help save lives and mitigate loses.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 5: Gender equality
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Only when men and women work together, can they build weather and climate-resilient societies. NiMet is committed to achieving gender equality and empowering girls and women. This is not just a matter of equity and justice. It is also essential to meeting the challenges of climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. The agency is also gender sensitive in areas of downscaling, seminars, and various out-reaches that we embark on.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Effective water resources management systems are directly dependent on rainfall, and how the available amount of water is used and stored. With increasing population, changing climate, and the expansion of human activity, water management has unique and evolving challenges. The ability to adapt and respond to climate variability and change depends on the understanding of the climate and how this understanding is incorporated into water resource management decisions by tracking, anticipating and responding to the changes. This understanding NiMet endeavours to provide to relevant bodies.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

The growth in market share of clean energy sources is facilitated by the knowledge of the potential capacity available for power generation and the safety measures that can be adhered to, to safeguard power-generating facilities. Nimet's forecast products can help give this edge to power producing outfits.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

Nimet's delivery of timely weather information to the sector mitigates against inherent weather hazards.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

By helping planners to make cities more climate-resilient, national weather and climate services reduce deaths and injuries from hazards, empower the poor and vulnerable, and protect cultural and natural heritage sites. At a national level, NiMet in conjunction with the National Emergency Agency (NEMA) actively participates in the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 by facilitating multi-hazard and impact-based warnings, and other tools for building weather and climate resilience.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 13: Climate action
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

NiMet works alongside WMO, as the co-custodian of this very important goal on climate action. The meteorological committee is challenged to provide decision-makers with the scientific facts and analysis needed to adapt to climate change impacts and build climate resilience. NiMet is firmly committed to supporting the Paris Agreement on climate change and to helping guide valuable emission-reduction actions as per "nationally determined contributions."

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 14: Life below water
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development

NiMet in partnership with the Nigerian Hydrological Agency(Nihsa), and other national entities supports international efforts to monitor ocean temperatures, currents, salinity, acidification, and surface levels – all major drivers of weather and climate. NiMet supports coastal management for Nigeria’s coastline and other vulnerable areas. As the oceans continue to warm and sea levels rise, the need for observations, research, and operational services for the oceans will continue to grow.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 15: Life on land
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

NiMet monitors major rivers and basins that shape the health of freshwater ecosystems, forests, and dryland lands. We provide essential data and forecasts, that support efforts to combat desertification and restore land and soil, including land affected by drought. Some of the products NiMet offers in that area are flood and drought bulletin, SPIs, etc.

NiMet Sustainable Development Goals
Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

One of NiMet's strategic priorities is to strengthen capacity development to enhance our meteorological and hydrological services in fulfilling our mandates for providing operational weather, climate, and water services.
