NiMet holds management retreat

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is currently holding a 3-day Management retreat from the 8th to 10th of January 2024 in Abuja. It is the first management under the leadership of Professor Charles Anosike since his assumption of office in December 2023. Speaking at the opening ceremony Professor Charles Anosike said the focus of the new management is to strengthen operations and reposition NiMet for better service delivery. He further stated that the overriding objective of the 2024 Management retreat was to strengthen collaborative relationships amongst the staff of the Agency. It will also give the new directors especially, an understanding of how NiMet works and what it does.

He expressed that the science of meteorology should be treated and handled with all seriousness because of its importance and the impact it has on lives, properties and the Nigerian Economy. Professor Anosike encouraged participants to be active and make contributions that will help the Agency further improve its mandate. He noticed that despite the prevailing challenges, there are opportunities in the external environment for NiMet. He encouraged the management to reduce wastage, prioritise spending and improve our Internally Generated Revenue. In conclusion, Professor Anosike reminded participants that NiMet products and services are weather-related and this has shown our activities impact the Nigerian Economy. Attending the 3- day retreat are the new Director, General Managers and selected management staff and heads of units. The COP conferences are intended for governments to agree on various policies to limit global temperature rises and adapt to the impact associated with the changing climate.

Leading the NiMet team is the DG/CEO Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, Also in this entourage are Director, Applied Meteorology, Professor Charles Anosike, Director, Human Resource Management and Administration Malam Saleh Tukur Yusuf and the Technical Assistant to DG/CEO Mr Oluwaseun Idowu. The DG/CEO showcased NiMet’s multi-sectoral products and services while discussing the critical role it is playing in Nigeria to mitigate the effects and impact of climate change in Nigeria. The Nigeria Contingent to the event was led by the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,, Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Also included was the Honourable Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development Mr Festus Keyamo (SAN).
