The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and 3IS today, 24 September 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support cooperation on the ANTICIPA project in Nigeria.

In his welcome remarks, the DG/CEO NiMet, Prof Charles Anosike highlighted the increase in new technologies and its importance in taking climate information to the last mile in support of Early Warning for All by providing AI-driven solutions for the last mile delivery.

ANTICIPA Project Manager Pridon Japaridze provided an overview of the initiative, which is being piloted in Sokoto State. He explained that 3IS uses NiMet information and advanced technology to generate knowledge that helps communities strengthen resilience and improve lives. The pilot uses an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot that receives NiMet forecasts, applies a decision tree to develop advisories, and delivers them as text or voice messages in users’ preferred language. Hausa is currently available for the Sokoto State pilot.

Prof. Charles Anosike emphasised the MoU’s importance and the potential to expand the project to other Nigerian states. He also highlighted collaboration with NiMet’s AI team on further research and development to support the project’s sustainability.

NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, signed the agreement on behalf of the Agency, while Hélène Pelisson signed on behalf of 3IS.

The MoU establishes a formal framework for collaboration between the two organizations in relation to the ANTICIPA project. It is expected to guide coordination, knowledge exchange, implementation planning, and engagement with relevant stakeholders, in line with the provisions of the agreement.

The signing marks a step toward strengthening institutional cooperation around the project in Nigeria. The next phase will involve translating the commitments in the MoU into agreed activities and measurable outcomes.
