Glory Amarachi Onyegbule is the Director, Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). DAMS is the Directorate charged with the responsibility of providing tailored weather and climate information services and products (Agromet, Hydromet, Marine met, Climate Services, and Database management) to promote weather-related hazards as well as provide early warning services to help mitigate extreme weather events and ensure effective decision making for sustainable socio-economic development of Nigeria.
With a vast experience spanning over three decades in the public sector, she joined the services of the then Department of Meteorology as a weather observer and later proceeded to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology and Climate Sciences from the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure in 2001. She also obtained a Master of Science Degree in Climatology from the Nassarawa State University, Keffi in 2021.
Through hard work and dedication, coupled with stoic commitment to the mission and vision of the agency, she rose through the ranks and got her conversion to the cadre of a meteorologist after obtaining her first Degree. Over the years, she developed a keen interest in the field of marine meteorology and followed through by honing her skills in this specialty where she contributed her expertise immensely to the advancement of marine meteorological services in NiMet. As the head of marine meteorological services in the agency, Glory led a team of meteorologists who initiated the production of daily marine weather forecasts in Nigeria. She is also a member of the National Maritime Search and Rescue task team and a member of the team that drafted the National Transport policy of Nigeria.
On the international scene, Glory is a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) – certified expert on marine service delivery, she is a serving member of the WMO Regional Area I (RAI) task team on marine meteorology and cost recovery.Her expertise include analysis and monitoring of marine weather conditions, forecasting marine weather phenomena, variables, and parameters, ensuring the quality of meteorological information and services, and communicating meteorological information to internal and external users. In recognition of her illustrious service to the agency, Glory was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Meteorologist of the Year by the Women in Aviation International Nigerian Chapter, and she has remained unwavering in promoting the ideals of her profession all through the years.
Additionally, Glory is passionate about public speaking, advocacy and awareness creation on weather and climate issues for the protection of vulnerable communities, as well as, mentoring young officers on the job. She is happily married and blessed with children.
